WOW! – Photography Boot Camp I / Camera & Exposure Basics

Did you get a new DSLR camera recently or have one sitting on the shelf collecting dust because all the buttons and dials intimidate you? Then join us for this FUN & INTERACTIVE introduction to a photography course!  You will learn the most important buttons and dials on your camera and when to use them. We will teach you what compositional elements make a great photograph. Many of our students have won photography awards after taking this class!  A DSLR or Mirrorless camera recommended.

WOW! - HDR Photography

Learn how to capture and process High Dynamic Range (HDR) images. HDR is a technique used to create images that show more details in both the shadows and highlight areas of an image. Have you ever taken a picture and the foreground looks great, but the skies were over exposed? Have you ever taken an images where you can’t see the details in the dark shadows?  Our own eyes have the ability to see more dynamic range than our cameras are able to capture. With HDR photography you can overcome this problem making your images clearer and more vibrant.  We will teach you how to capture these types of images as well as demonstrate several software packages that are used to process the HDR images. In this six session class we will have two field trips, Springton Manor Farm in Glenmore and Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site in Elverson on Saturday afternoons.

Level:                          This class is for advanced beginners to intermediate photographers looking to improve their images.
Requirements:           A DLSR or Mirrorless camera and tripod recommended. You will need a PC/MAC and software to process your images at home.


WOW! – The Magnificent World of Macro Photography

Macro photography is one of the few types of photography that anyone can do just about anywhere and at just about any time and it’s a lot of fun! All around us are tiny objects just waiting be to be photographed and with the right equipment and technique, you’ll learn how to capture the beauty of these tiny subjects.

While expensive macro lenses are nice, they are not necessary. You will learn about inexpensive equipment to get you close, sometimes even closer than those expensive macro lenses. We will also teach you what camera settings work best (aperture, shutter speed and ISO), best compositional practices, how to light tiny objects, focus stacking for maximum sharpness and much, much more…

One of the biggest misconceptions is that you can't take great photographs with a smart phone. Today's smart phones are quickly catching up with the technology in advanced DSLR cameras. Although as with any camera, a person can take poor or great photos. We will provide you with the knowledge and techniques so you can use your smart phone to take photographs that are so amazing no one would believe your phone and not a professional DSLR.

WOW! – How did you make that picture look so amazing? – Adobe Lightroom

In this 7-session course meeting on Monday evenings, you’ll be taught how to process your digital photographs so they look amazing! Adobe Lightroom software is used by almost every professional photographer and we will teach you the essentials of using it to organize and edit your images like a professional. We will be doing real-world demonstrations with student’s photographs and teach you how to develop your “ho-hum” images into “WOW” images that are award-worthy. You’ll be amazed how much better your images will look after this class!

 WOW! – Photoshop for Photographers  (*NEW)

Go beyond basic editing and learn the skills that every photographer needs to know about using Photoshop to make stunning images. We’ll show you how to use selections and mask to edit portraits, how to remove spots, facial blemishes turn grins into smiles, whiten teeth,  changing the color of hair, eyes, and clothes, how to clean-up distractions, remove signs, telephone poles, move trees, animals, people and buildings. Replace boring skies with dramatic ones. We will also be showing you how to make amazing composite images using parts from other several images. Learn the basics of selections, masks, blend modes, content aware clone stamping and patch tools and much more!

Have you mastered how to use your camera but still struggle with capturing compelling images? In five short sessions, we will show you how to take more captivating images with straight-forward camera and software techniques. We will give you new ideas and inspire you to raise your photography to greater levels. Improve your compositions by seeing more creatively!

WOW! – Wildlife Photography Workshop (*NEW)

This class will teach students how to capture amazing images of wildlife. Special guest lecturer: Warren Hatch, international award winning photographer, 2017 National Audubon Photography Winner.
Intended audience: Photographers interested in learning how to capture wildlife images of wildlife, including elk, bears, tigers, cheetahs and more.   Participants should have a working knowledge of their DSLR or Mirrorless camera body.  There will a be lecture and one week will be for reviewing student images and some basic edit techniques to improve them.  There is also an optional Saturday field trip to Lake Tobias Wildlife Preserve in central PA. This class is not intended as an introduction to photography.

 WOW! – Wildlife Photo Safari (*NEW)

Join us as we travel to central PA to Lake Tobias Wildlife Park for a photo safari. We will take an open-air cruiser across 150 acres of rolling hills, pastures and woodlands where you be able to photography rare and exotic animals from around the world.  (Note: this class is included in our “WOW! – Wildlife Photography Workshop” that combines classroom training, this trip and a class on critiquing and editing wildlife images—see above class)

WOW! – Pennhurst Asylum – abandoned, decaying and haunted!  *NEW*

Pennhurst State School and Hospital, originally known as the Eastern Pennsylvania State Institution for the feeble-minded and epileptic was an institution for mentally and physically disabled individuals of Southeastern Pennsylvania. After a much controversy, it closed on December 9, 1987. We have been granted permission to photograph this historic site that has been abandoned for 30 years and is in a state of decay. Many say this place is haunted by the souls of those who once resided there. Unique photographic opportunities are around every corner.  Now is the time to take this workshop as developers recently purchased the property and is likely to be demolished soon. DSLR or Mirrorless camera and tripod with remote release recommended. Liability release required.

Capturing the heart and soul of our furry friends goes beyond just knowing how to push the shutter button. Learn to capture your pet’s emotions, feelings and soul.  We will teach you techniques for creating powerful formal portraits as well as fun and silly ones that shows your pet’s unique personality.

WOW! – Fantastic Fire-Spinning and More Surprises!

Our most popular class is back with new effects. While playing with fire can sometimes exciting, it can also be extremely dangerous. However, in a controlled environment with the fire department standing by on-site, we will provide you with the opportunity to safely photograph some absolutely amazing images of “Fire Spinning” and other fire art. Several of last year’s participants went on to win photo competitions based on images they captured during this class.

Join us as we take a trip back in time at the Rail Road Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg, PA where we will capture the more than 100 locomotives, railroad cars and displays.

WOW! – Ben Franklin Bridge Walk and City Skyline Night Shoot!  *NEW*

Join us as we walk across the Ben Franklin Bridge and capture unique perspectives of the City of Brotherly Love from high atop the bridge. After the walk we will capture the Philadelphia Skyline at dusk from across the river in Camden.  This workshop involves a lot of walking!
